What does the State of Michigan say about what forms of IDs a notary can accept? According to the Michigan Law on Notarial Acts, a notary public must verify the identity of the signer of a document by examining a valid ID that is issued by a government agency, has a photograph of the bearer, and has an expiration date. The ID Must Not Be Expired to use it for a notarization.
Pursuant to Michigan Notary Public Act 238 of 2003, MCL 55.285, Section 25 (6)(c) ” Identified on the basis of a current license, identification card, or record issued by a federal or state government that contains the individual’s photograph and signature”
The following are the accepted forms of ID in Michigan:
- State-issued ID card
- Passport
- U.S. Military ID
- Federal Native American tribe ID
- Michigan State University
- Wayne State University or
- The University of Michigan issued photo ID card
Without a Valid ID, the notary public cannot perform the notarial act. Valid ID protects both the signer and the notary from fraud and liability.
